Perfect Skin for Perfect Selfies

Winter is on its way and most of us feel the effects of the season on our skin. The low humidity of colder climates can lead to dry skin and the heaters we use to warm us up can suck up moisture which can really affect our skin. Regardless of your skin type, winter is the season when most of us need to adjust our skincare routines. The dip in temperatures will affect your skin, which will require a change in your skincare regimen.

If you have oily skin (shiny, greasy), like me, the misconception when it comes to taking care of your skin in winter, is that you need to use rich cleansers and moisturizers. Please don't do that! Try and avoid products like these, which will only make your skin feel greasy and cause clogged pores resulting in breakouts.

If you have dry skin (flaky, scaly, rough), please stay away from foaming face washes which dry out your skin, including soap, as it is also extremely drying.

Combination skin is tricky because only certain parts of your face are oily, (your T-zone) the central part of your face, including your forehead, nose, and chin.

If you have sensitive skin, it may sting, burn or itch after using certain products or make-up.

Normal skin is clear, balanced and not sensitive.

Using a gentle facial cleanser is a good idea in winter. Use a non-alcohol based facial toner across your face to keep your skin from being stripped of excess moisture and of course, moisturizing is a big part of your routine to help keep your skin hydrated. I would recommend products that have hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the best ingredients to moisturise your skin, whether it is oily, sensitive or prone to breakouts. Its ability to hold moisture means it can offer a steady supply to the skin throughout the day.

Regardless of your skin type, reach for a gentle facial cleanser. I would recommend Micellar Cleansing Water or a cleansing Water Gel. Micellar Water will help purify and mattify your skin without leaving you shiny and will also not dry you out. Remember to use a non-alcohol based toner after cleansing and use a water based moisturizer which will give you long-lasting hydration and reduces appearance of excess shine. Take note: Moisturizing adds water to the skin, not oil.

Maintain a regular skin care routine, that means cleansing, toning, moisturizing twice a day, and using a broad-spectrum of SPF 15 or higher. Make sure your day cream contains sunscreen, so your skin is always protected during the day from the sun and you won’t need additional sunscreen on your face. Please clean your skin thoroughly before going to bed and do not forget to wash off your make-up or you will have breakouts.

Take care of your skin beauties!
